The oldest sport in North America, lacrosse was played by Native Americans across the US and Canada as early as the 1400s.  As in soccer, players may not use their hands, instead relying on a netted stick to catch and throw the small rubber ball.  The object of the game is to the ball into the opposing team's goal to score a point.  Contact between players is frequent and the game has a reputation for roughness.

The game was first adopted by settlers in the 1600s and it soon became popular in Canada and North America.  It eventually spread to Europe and has remained a popular sport since then.  There are currently over 250,000 active players within the United States, at all levels of experience, from beginners to professionals.  Clubs exist at the High School and Collegiate levels, and there are indoor and outdoor professional leagues.
