Originally played
with a deerskin ball and a wooden stick, lacrosse equipment has
changed significantly. Early sticks used by Native American tribes
varied according to length and design. Some were straight and had a
small wooden pocket, scarecly larger than the ball itself. Others
had curved shafts, made by bending the wood, and utilized webbed
leather pockets much like the ones used today, with large,
triangular pockets for greater ball control. Balls could be made
from wood, stone, or baked clay.
Over the years,
lacrosse equipment evolved, being replaced by better and safer
equipment. First the hair-filled leather ball was replaced with
hard rubber, and pads began to be worn by players. Handmade wooden
sticks were replaced by manufactured sticks, with aluminum shafts
and light plastic heads. Modern equipment continues to change and
evolve, as sticks are designed for ever-increasing accuracy and
control, using cutting-edge materials and technology
Lacrosse
Equipment Today
Modern lacrosse
equipment is now a very high-tech affair, incorporating various
titanium alloys in the shaft and different types of plastics and
synthetic materials in the heads and protective equipment. Sticks
are designed for different positions, emphasizing speed, power,
control, or a combination of things.
In addition to
the multiple designs of sticks for various players and positions,
lacrosse equipment includes a wide variety of protective year,
including gloves, helmets, pads, and mouthguards, all of which are
mandatory. Like any other modern sport, shoes, athletic wear, and
various types of training equipment are also available.
