Rules differ for
men's and women's lacrosse, both in terms of field size, number of
players, length of game, and contact rules. For both men and
women's lacrosse the object of the game is to shoot the ball into
the opponent's goal, with the team scoring the most points winning.
Games are started with a face-off, with the ball being placed
between the sticks of two opposing players who compete for control.
Men's lacrosse
is played with 10 on a side. Games last for 60 minutes and are
divided into four 15 minute quarters. Body contact is permitted as
well as contact between sticks, but excessive aggression is not
tolerated. High School games are generally only 48 minutes long,
with four 12 minute quarters.
Adapted for
women's play in the 1890s, women's lacrosse differs from men in that
physical contact between players is prohibited, the only acceptable
contact is with sticks. Games are played 12 on 12 and are divided
into two 30 minute halves. There are no boundaries to the field,
but if the ball enters an area that is unplayable it is considered
'out of bounds'.
