Lacrosse exists
around the U.S. at many universities and colleges. With two
professional leagues exist in North America, the
National Lacrosse
League for indoor play and
Major League Lacrosse for outdoor play,
the sport also enjoys huge popularity as a club activity. Currently
there are some 400 college teams and 1,200 high school teams across
the nation. Nationally, the sport also has NCAA divisions I, II, and
III as well as a National Federated High School program.
Lacrosse can
also be found at the international level, having been included in
the 1904 and 1908 Olympics. Since 1967 the International Lacrosse
Federation has conducted a men's world championship, and in 1969 a
women's world championship was inagurated, replaced in 1982 by the
World Cup tournament for women. |
